Spring 2012

Tucker County High School After School Trail Program
April 25 – May 3, 2012

Day one was cancelled because of snow! Students quickly made progress as soon as the snow melted. Ten students signed up for this cooperative project to learn trail building and repair skills and to work on their school’s Outdoor Learning Trail—all the while, gaining community service hours required for graduation.

April 25-May 3, we worked, joined by AmeriCorps volunteers who worked with the Heart of the Highlands Trail System for several days this spring.

Students worked side-by-side with Jay Hamric, TCHS Principal, and Erin Marks, English Teacher & Outdoor Club Sponsor. AmeriCorps volunteers and Ken Dzaack, CVI Sustainable Trails Specialist provided leadership.

Student Conservation Association Trail Crew
Works on Heart of the Highlands Trails
September-October 2012

Heart of the Highlands Trail System and its partners hosted an SCA trail crew during September and October, 2012. The crew constructed the connecting segment from the Camp 70 Bridge to the Splash Dam South Trail on the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge including a 30′ footbridge. They also worked to repair the Allegheny Trail on the Canaan Mountain area south of the Canaan Loop Road building 1500′ of turnpike.  All of these trail segments are part of the HoH Core Loop Trail.
