Dolly Sods Wilderness area has many popular hiking trails near Canaan Valley. It is located in the Monongahela National Forest and is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Dolly Sods has recently been identified as a hot spot by the “Leave No Trace” organization. A hot spot is an area impacted by human activities. By educating the public and following the Leave No Trace principals these impacts can be mitigated.
“The Seven Principles of Leave No Trace provide an easily understood framework of minimum impact practices for anyone visiting the outdoors. Although Leave No Trace has its roots in backcountry settings, the Principles have been adapted so that they can be applied anywhere — from remote wilderness areas, to local parks and even in your own backyard. They also apply to almost every recreational activity.
When you Leave No Trace, you show you care. The seven principles:
- Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces
- Dispose of Waste Properly
- Leave What You Find
- Minimize Campfire Impacts
- Respect Wildlife
- Be Considerate of Others”
